Fair Fields is a family run market gardening operation located on a scenic farm near Neustadt, ON. We grow a asparagus, rhubarb and strawberries and are exploring sweet corn and fall crops. We also keep bees. Most of our crops are available for retail and wholesale and the strawberries are also u-pick.
At Fair Fields we aim to provide fresh, healthy and delicious produce. Our farming practices improve the health of the soil and the neighbouring woods, springs and pond. In future years, we plan to use draft horses for field power and soil fertility. We practice organic production techniques and sell most of our products locally, through retail, wholesale and u-pick. This season we started the organic certification process and hope to be certified by June 2021.
We believe everyone should have a connection with their food and trusting relationship with the farmers who produce it. This is why we welcome u-pick and wholesale customers to visit the farm and learn more about how we produce food,
Devan Penney is Fair Fields owner and principal farmer. Devan learned organic production methods working at Everdale Organic Farm, Orchard Hill Farm (where he worked with draft horses), and through volunteering at organic farms in Nova Scotia, Spain and Italy.
Devan’s appreciation for good food was nourished by work as a cook in restaurants in Toronto, Peterborough and Whistler. He works off-farm in the winter as a carpenter, though in future years he has hopes to venture into agritourism or brewing beer.
Devan is aided on the farm by his partner Nicole, their parents, his uncle Jim, beekeeper Chris Gore and hopefully soon by their daughters Lilly and Fiona! There are also seasonal employees and various volunteers throughout the year, whose help is invaluable.
